I just LOVE this kiss, ok? It’s the most normal kiss they shared. It’s a “see you later” kiss, like they were a normal couple, not a vampire and the slayer, but a boyfriend and a girlfriend who kiss in front of people.
Angel “City Of” novelization by Nancy Holder -
Angel sat by himself, by the phone. After a moment he thought , Hell with it, picked up , dialed, and waited.
Buffy’s voice poured into his heart, “Hello? Hello?”
Angel hung up. He was certain of one thing: He had not been sent to Tina to learn the true meaning of grief after all.
Her name was still Buffy.
“That fact that he called her just to hear her voice kills me”
You know, that’s not what gets me. It’s that he had just had this unbelievable, life changing day and he wanted to tell her about it. He wanted to tell her about Tina, about his regret and sadness at her death. He wanted to tell her he was scared, that he didn’t know if he could be a champion. He wanted to say, “Hey, you’ll never guess who is working for me now.” He wanted to tell her he made a friend. Him! A new friend? That he thought Doyle would be a really good friend, too. Maybe he would poke fun at himself about jumping into the wrong car, “Real heroic, right?” And the thing is, she wanted to talk to him too. She spends the whole episode looking for someone to listen to her, to share with her, to comfort her. She was looking for Angel, she even thought she saw him in The Bronze. Because she needed to tell him that she’s a little bit worried about college, maybe it’s not for her? She wanted to tell him that her roommate was almost certainly a total demon from Hell. “No, Angel. Really. Celine. Dion. Come on!” and he’d laugh, but really he’d think Celine Dion sang really pretty songs. She’d tell him about how she wanted to break out slayer moves on that jerk Professor, “… And what kind of lame vamp name is Sunday, anyway?” She’d tell him she was really proud of him and that she thought he would do wonderfully “helping the helpless”, even if she thought that slogan sounded kind of kooky. He’d agree that no self-respecting vampire would call themselves “Sunday.” He’d remind her that she got into college because she is smart an capable. He’d remind her she belongs there, that she just need to ease her way into it. She’d tell him she misses him, and he’d smile, sadly of course, and after a breath he’d tell her, “I miss you, too.”
This is what kills me. That they lost this part of who they were to each other, because they really needed that too.

Buffy and Angel’s love for one another was a important part of their characters. I don’t understand how people can completely overlook that and bash the entire ship by calling it a unrealistic high school romance. It was so much more than that.
Word. If they had been just some silly high school romance? Angel wouldn’t have spent centuries in hell with only Buffy’s memory to hold on to. He wouldn’t have regained his sanity by her side. He wouldn’t have given her up because he loved her too much not to. He wouldn’t have spent years fighting his feelings for her- feelings that came rushing back every.single.time he saw her. He wouldn’t have made the biggest sacrifice in his life by giving her up- again- to save the world. He wouldn’t consider her the one who mattered the most in 245 years. He wouldn’t have experienced his only moment of true happiness in over two centuries with her.
Buffy wouldn’t have fallen in love after getting to know him. She wouldn’t have given up her own happiness to save the world. She wouldn’t consider him, four years later, the one thing she’d love more than anything in this life. She wouldn’t have known him inside out, the good and the bad, and still love him with everything she had.
Buffy and Angel are so much more than a high school romance. They’re warriors who love each other above anything else- but who are mature enough, selfless enough, not to let that love send the world to hell.
ANGEL: I’m not going to say good-bye. If we get through this… I’m just going to go. You understand? There is just too much to…
